WHY HYDROGEN INSTEAD OF HELIUM?

Helium is an important carrier gas for most GC and GC-MS applications. However, helium resources have been dwindling for years as natural deposits are limited and non-renewable. This leads to significant price increases and long lead times. Alternative gas options are therefore needed.

Hydrogen can work just as well as helium. Modern GC / GC-MS systems can be easily converted to use hydrogen as a carrier gas and efficiently calibrated.

With a hydrogen generator, laboratories can produce their own hydrogen in-house on demand, reducing the impact of helium shortages and rising costs, and achieving reliable and reproducible chromatographic results.

Advantages of hydrogen over helium
  • Higher speed for faster analyses without compromising separation performance
  • Hydrogen as a carrier gas is more sensitive than helium and enables elution at lower temperatures, which extends the service life of the chromatography column
  • Lower costs with high availability and the use of gas generators is possible

Hydrogen generators - tailor-made for your high-precision requirements

For laboratory applications such as gas chromatography, three types of gas are usually required for one and the same device: Nitrogen, zero air and hydrogen.

The introduction of our new chromalytic hydrogen generators complements our existing range of nitrogen and zero air generators. This enables us to supply you with all three important gas types from a single source.

As an alternative to cost-intensive helium cylinders, hydrogen generators only require deionized water and a standard power supply for continuous operation. The generators use a 100% titanium cell with a proton exchange membrane (PEM) to produce the hydrogen gas from deionized water. Dry filtration stages are used to dry the gas.

Chromalytic offers two types of hydrogen generators that differ in the drying method. This has a direct influence on the dew point and the hydrogen purity:

1. H2-100, H2-200 and H2-300

Uses a regenerative permeation membrane dryer for a purity of up to 99.9996%, which is ideal for carrier gas.

2. H2-100D, H2-300D, H2-500D and H2-100D

Uses a maintenance-free dual dynamic regeneration system for a higher purity of up to 99.99996% and a lower dew point for fuel and carrier gas.

A single hydrogen generator can supply up to 20 GC devices and is available in different flow rates to meet individual customer requirements.

The compact design allows installation close to the instruments in the laboratory, eliminating the need for long gas lines and ensuring that the analyzers are supplied with high-purity gas.

A state-of-the-art control system, linked to a user-friendly touchscreen, constantly monitors key operating parameters to ensure safe and consistent performance. Integrated sensors automatically shut down the generator in the event of leaks, contaminated water, low water pressure or overpressure.
